BELTON VICTORIOUS IN THE RAIN
Belton picked up a huge 23 points in the rain and the dark on a day when they made ground on the rest of the division.
Belton skipper Ali won the toss and elected to bowl first in grey skies and on a considerably damp wicket with both captains agreeing to reduce to match to 40 overs per innings.
Brown was looking solid for Caister right from the off but the visitors didn’t get away in the early overs with 31 runs coming from the first 13 overs before Nichols made breakthrough when Lamming tried to go over the top but could only find Comer at mid-off.
Goodby came and went quickly when Ali managed to find the edge with Cropley parrying the ball at first-slip, and Rehman pouching the catch on the rebound. Those couple of wickets brought the Brown brothers, so often Caister’s vital partnership, to the crease together with a rain shower soon following and the covers were back on with play halted for about 20 minutes before conditions were deemed acceptable to resume.
The rain break seemed to break Brown’s concentration however, and the opener departed for 37 when he was adjudged lbw to Nichols. Brown, who found an able ally in Hewitt, passed his fifty with a drive over cover before Savoury picked up his wicket in fortuitous circumstances. Brown tried to flick a leg-side delivery but could only top-edge to Ali at mid-wicket for a fine 51.
Savoury also ended Hewitt’s contribution when he attempted one shot too many and was bowled for 28. Church departed for the solitary run when he was the recipient of a vicious bouncer from Rehman and could only find Cropley at slip.
Some later power hitting from French took the visitors up towards a challenging total, taking Savoury for 16 and Rehman for 12 in the process.
Harvey was run-out by keeper Savoury in comical fashion before French launched the final ball of the innings over cover for six to finish the Caister innings on 187-7 from 40 overs.
Savoury and Goreham knew that a good start was vital in these conditions and the pair did exactly that although they did have some fortune on the way with Savoury dropped twice and Goreham once, all by Brown at point.
The partnership had reached exactly 50 when Savoury departed for 18, edging Hewitt behind to keeper Church. Rehman immediately made his intentions clear when he got himself off the mark with a six off Oxborough.
Goreham quickly removed the spin of Myhill out of the attack and passed his second half-century of the season in the process. With another 50 partnership having been passed, Goreham departed when he could only find Lamming off the bowling of Hewitt for a fine 61.
Rehman continued in the same vain and passed fifty of his own with a boundary over cover-point. Ali departed trying to increase a run-rate that was already at the required rate when he skied Hewitt into the hand of Myhill at mid-wicket for just two. Cropley came and went quickly when he could only fend off a short ball from Goodby to Lamming at slip.
Belton were 134-4, 54 runs required with 8 overs remaining. Nichols drove Goodby through the covers for four before being bowled by Oxborough. Belton always fancied their chances with Rehman still at the crease and he danced down the track to launch Goodby high over long-on for a monstrous six.
Savoury flicked a full toss from Harvey through mid-wicket for four to move Belton closer to victory before he was caught out in the deep by Brown from a Harvey long-hop for 8.
Rehman was dropped three times in the 38th over and Khan was clean bowled to leave Belton requiring six runs off the final over. A mix-up meant that Caister had to find a new bowler to bowl the final over and French was entrusted with the task. However, Rehman need only two deliveries to find the runs required to give Belton a vital victory by three wickets, finishing 79 unbeaten.
