SLOPPY BELTON FALL SHORT AT CRINGLEFORD
Belton travelled to relegation-threatened Cringleford Lodge hoping to build on the previous week’s morale boosting win at Felthorpe.
Belton skipper Ali won the toss and after some deliberation elected to field first and took it upon himself to get the breakthrough when Arthurs was deceived by a ball with extra bounce and could only lob a simple catch to Savoury at cover.
The ever-reliable Gregory and Cringleford new-boy Mason set about putting the early loss behind them and slowly but surely make progress for the hosts, despite Nichols conceding only 17 runs, and having Mason dropped, from his opening nine-over salvo.
Gregory and Mason milked the Belton change bowlers with ease in the middle overs and steadily made their way to 66-1 at the drinks break. Belton couldn’t seem to lodge the duo but were seemingly content with the run-rate at the current stage.
The introduction of Khan did manage to bring the visitors a breakthrough shortly after the score had passed a hundred with Mason unable to clear Goreham on the long-off boundary to depart for 41.
Following that breakthrough, Hodds was soon in the wickets from the other end, picking up three victims in quick succession. Gregory’s vigil was ended just after reaching his half-century when he played all around a straight delivery and was bowled without adding to his score.
Yeruva was also bowled before Stearman provided Ali with a simple catch at mid-wicket. Khan and Hodds also combined to remove Mirza with the latter taking a fine steepling catch at square-leg.
With Cringleford hobbling along at 135-6 with only six overs remaining it appeared that the visitors were in complete control but Boorman had other ideas. Boorman initially tore into Hodds and Khan before continuing his assault on Belton’s returning openers – passing his half-century from just seventeen deliveries. He was run-out from the last ball of the innings for 57 but had propelled his team to 211-7 from 45 overs.
Belton’s opening duo had the pace pair of Caim and Merrill to contend with in the opening overs – both Savoury and Goreham driving down the ground to the fence. The pair had reached 23 when Goreham went back to a ball that skidded on and was bowled by Merrill for 9.
George joined his brother at the crease and despite guiding his first ball for four, some tight bowling from Caim meant that the run-rate soon dropped. George Savoury departed for 12 when he was beaten by a Caim inswinger to leave Belton 49-2.
That wicket brought the skipper to the crease and with Savoury beginning to become more fluent Belton were moving along nicely. Rogers’ first over went for ten runs with Savoury passing his fifty in the process before he perished in the following over when he chased a wide delivery from Merrill and could only find the hands of Mason at point for 58.
Ali followed Savoury back to the pavilion shortly after when he offered Merrill the simplest of return catches to leave Belton 126-4 from 26 overs. As was the case the previous week, it was down to Cropley and Nichols to rescue the visitors. Nichols content to push singles and give Cropley the strike who took a like to the full bowling of Boorman. The partnership had almost reached 50 and had taken the visitors to within 40 runs of their target when both batsman departed quickly.
Nichols played around a straight delivery from spinner Rogers to be adjudged leg-before for 19 before Cropley was bowled by Boorman via an inside edge shortly after passing his third half-century in just five innings this season.
Despite Cropley’s efforts in the middle-order Belton were in danger of falling short with the injured Goreham the only recognised batsman remaining. Goreham tried in vain and departed when he could only find Gregory at mid-wicket to give the returning Caim his second wicket.
Comer was bowled by Boorman for just three and Hodds was cleaned up from the final ball of the innings to wrap things up on 196-9, 16 runs short of victory.
