BELTON VICTORIOUS IN NORTH NORFOLK
Belton returned from their 140-mile round trip to Narborough victorious by 65 runs on another hot afternoon in North Norfolk
Narborough skipper Coe won the toss and surprisingly elected to field on a track that had been baked by the sun the previous day.
Toll and the in-form Goreham were handed the task of getting the visitors off to a good start but they found the bowling of Reynolds and King difficult to get away in the early exchanges.
With the score on just 19 from seven overs, Toll departed – nicking a rising delivery from Reynolds behind to ‘keeper Coe for just the single run.
George Savoury joined Goreham at the crease but he only lasted a couple of overs when he could only help a long-hop into the hands of Eves at square-leg off the bowling of King for 3.
The two early wickets brought skipper Savoury to the crease to help Goreham improve on what had been a poor start, with just 25 runs coming from the first ten overs. The Belton duo were content with milking the bowling for a while and attempting punish the bad delivery with the slow outfield meaning that boundaries were hard to come by.
The pair passed the fifty partnership with just four boundaries being scored and reached the half-way point at 77-1.
The score had reached 92 when Goreham was dismissed when he could only top-edge a sweep shot off Fox up into the hands of ‘keeper Coe for 39. Savoury and new batsman Aazam were still happy to push singles and get Belton into the last ten overs without losing any more wickets and they managed to do that with score on 128-3.
Savoury passed fifty with a single down to third man before successfully attempting to up the run rate in the last ten overs. Eves and Still were despatched for twelve and thirteen from respectively before Aazam launched Grass in to field for a huge maximum. The pair had added 82 for the fourth wicket when Aazam was cleaned up by the retuning King for 20.
Savoury was bowled in King’s next over attempting a big shot down the ground to depart just ten runs short of his hundred. Edmonds (12*) and Warner (6*) saw Belton up towards the 200 mark in the last couple of overs to finish on 199-5.
Belton were looking for an economical start to build some early pressure but Grass and S.King had other ideas. Grass pounced on any width offered by Wright with several boundaries through the off-side whilst King took a liking to Savoury too slog two maximums over cow corner.
Narborough’s openers had reached fifty inside nine overs but Savoury got the important breakthrough when Grass attempted a slog-sweep but could only top-edge into the sky with Savoury taking the catch off his own bowling.
Skipper Coe nicked the left-arm seam of Khan through to the gloves of ‘keeper Goreham for just three before Comer bowled Eves for 1 to leave the hosts on 81-3 at the half-way stage of the innings.
In the second over after the drinks break, Comer picked up his second wicket when D.King could only drive straight to Stanford at mid-on without scoring. Warner bowled four tidy overs of wobble but the introduction of Stanford finally ended S.King’s vigil. With King attempting to get up with the required rate he could only find the safe hands of Aazam at a deep mid-off to depart for 46.
Wright returned to dismiss the last recognised batsman when Steele slapped to Savoury at cover for 19 before Stanford went through the lower order.
The Reynolds brothers were both bowled for one before B.King was also bowled without scoring with the Narborough innings finishing on 134-9.
